The Kraken Infantry Unit (Ukrainian: Спецпідрозділ «Кракен» Spezpidrosdil «Kraken») is an independent reconnaissance and commando unit of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The unit was formed on February 24, 2022 – the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine – in Kharkiv with demobilized veterans of the Azov Regiment and volunteers. Therefore, some of the fighters wear the insignia of the Azov Regiment in addition to the Kraken insignia and, like them, profess their commitment to Ukrainian nationalism, whose primary purpose is to protect the inhabitants from the invaders.
