The word Shaka, accompanied by a typical hand position in which the closed hand or fist is raised with the thumb and little finger spread out (see illustration), is a gesture that is common in Hawaii and, after being adopted by surfers there, also among these athletes. It is used on various occasions and means something like "Cool!", "Relax!", "Okay!", "Good wave". Originally it stands for the hammock symbolically stretched between these fingers (hang loose, as the surfers say). The gesture was declared the official hand signal of the state of Hawaii by law in June 2024.
