The Wagner Group (Russian: Группа Вагнера) is a Russian paramilitary organization led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. Although formally organized as a private company, there are close ties between the group and the Russian state. The state uses the group for hybrid warfare and covert operations to violently assert Russian interests in predominantly African and Asian countries without officially intervening. The Wagner Group is also active in disinformation and propaganda campaigns abroad to exert political influence in favor of Russia. Since 2022, it has been participating in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, fighting openly alongside Russia's regular armed forces. The Wagner Group is equipped with Russian military hardware and has its own air combat assets. Its equipment and combat power are comparable to regular armed forces. Members of the organization are mostly former military personnel. Since at least June 2022, the group has also been recruiting Russian convicts and foreign mercenaries. Video footage from the Syrian civil war and radio intercepts from the Russo-Ukrainian War suggest that the Wagner Group has committed war crimes such as torture and executions there.
