Wagner Group (Russian: Группа Вагнера) is a Russian paramilitary organization led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. Formally organized under private law, there are close ties between the group and the Russian state, which uses the group for hybrid warfare and covert operations to violently represent Russian interests in predominantly African and Asian countries without officially intervening. The Wagner Group is also active abroad with disinformation and propaganda campaigns in order to exert political influence in favor of Russia. Since 2022, it has been taking part in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in which it openly fights alongside Russia's regular armed forces. The Wagner Group is equipped with Russian military equipment and has its own air combat assets. Equipment and combat power correspond to regular armed forces. Members of the organization are mostly former military personnel. Since June 2022 at the latest, the group has also been recruiting Russian prisoners and foreign mercenaries. Video footage from the Syrian civil war and radio messages from the Russo-Ukrainian war suggest that the Wagner group committed war crimes there, such as torture and executions.
