Outer Heaven was a fortress in Africa founded by Big Boss. During the San Hieronymo Incident (1970), Big Boss received a microfilm from Gene containing vast amounts of money in accounts. With this money he built Outer Heaven after Zero cheated on him about the Les Enfants Terribles project. The fortress symbolizes independence from the Patriots, including the fact that soldiers always have a place there. Outer Heaven received attention in 1995 when news outlets reported that a nuclear weapon was being developed there. It was Metal Gear TX 55, a nuclear main battle tank capable of launching a nuclear weapon anywhere, be it desert or mountains. After Solid Snake thwarts Big Boss plans, he activates Outer Heaven's self-destruct mechanism. Solid escapes in time before the fortress explodes. Big Boss also escapes badly injured but is presumed dead.
