Outer Heaven was a fortress in Africa, founded by Big Boss. During the incident on San Hieronymo (1970), Big Boss received a microfilm from Gene containing huge amounts of money in accounts. He built Outer Heaven from this fund after Zero had betrayed him over the Les Enfants Terribles project. The fortress symbolizes independence from the Patriots, among other things that soldiers always have a place there. Outer Heaven received attention in 1995 when intelligence services reported that a nuclear weapon was being developed there. It was Metal Gear TX 55, a nuclear battle tank that can fire a nuclear weapon anywhere, be it desert or mountains. After Solid Snake foils Big Boss's plans, he activates Outer Heaven's self-destruct mechanism. Solid is able to escape in time before the fortress explodes. Big Boss also escapes, seriously injured, but is presumed dead.
