The GIGN (Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale) is the elite special forces unit of the French Gendarmerie, founded in 1974. Its main tasks include counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, protecting people at risk and neutralising dangerous criminals. With around 400 members, the unit is divided into highly specialised teams, including intervention teams, negotiators and explosives experts.
