The Brigades de recherche et d'intervention (BRI; German search and intervention brigades), also known as "anti-gang brigades", are special units of the French police founded in 1964. They are subordinate to the French Ministry of the Interior (Ministère de l'Intérieur).
The BRI specializes in serious robbery and hostage-taking. In hostage-taking cases, they are supported by the Préfecture de police; they are nicknamed BRI-BAC (“Brigade Anti-Commando” counter-commando brigades) or “BRI en formation BAC”.
