The 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade is a large unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces and bears the honorary name "Black Zaporozhians". This traditional name refers to a historical Ukrainian cavalry formation from the time of the Ukrainian People's Republic. The current brigade was formed in 2002 on the basis of the former 72nd Guards Mechanized Division and is one of the well-known mechanized units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Mechanized brigades form an important part of the combat troops within the Ukrainian Ground Forces, combining infantry, armored vehicles and support weapons. The 72nd Mechanized Brigade has been associated with several front lines since 2014 and especially since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, including Kyiv, Bakhmut and Vuhledar.
